About Us

ID Inc. was created by Paul Kenny in 1995 following a 16-year career in the sign industry. All told, Paul has been active in the industry for over 32 years and handled over $150,000,000 of sign projects.

Paul began his career in the sign industry in 1978 joining Cummings Signs of Canada in the manufacturing plant. Cummings Canada was created in 1970 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cummings Incorporated of Nashville, Tennessee to serve the requirements of the General Motors dealership sign program. Following a period of training in manufacturing, Paul joined the sales force in 1979, learning the various services offered to Cummings growing list of customers. Skills related to leasing, maintenance, design, specification and manufacturing of custom signs and multiple-location program accounts were acquired over the years through Cummings’ mentorship and Paul’s personal experience. In early 1984, Cummings Canada was purchased by Jim Pattison Industries, broadening the scope of Cummings capabilities.

Paul conceived of, and landed Cummings largest single-sign contract- the Molson sign atop the Fleet Street brewery in Toronto in 1987. At $28,000 per month, it became a landmark on the Gardiner Expressway, incorporating the largest electronic message centre at the time as well as 60 tons of structural steel. The sign remained in place for 18 years until condominium development forced its removal in 2004.

Around the same time, Paul began his long association with the auto industry by managing the Nissan Canada sign program. The Passport division of General Motors was added to his responsibilities in 1989. Cummings transitioned the Passport network of dealerships to Saturn-Saab-Isuzu in 1991, changing the signs at 75 dealerships across Canada in four weeks.

In 1994, Paul conceived of and landed the largest single-sign advertising contract on the Gardiner Expressway at $73,000 per month (a record that still stands today) for Labatt Breweries at SkyDome. The sign structure still stands today outside the Rogers Centre.

In 1995, Paul resigned from Cummings and created ID as an independent contractor. ID was contracted by Pattison to manage the newly-outsourced General Motors dealership sign program. The outsource negotiation with General Motors Canada was 4 years in the making and established a new business model for automotive sign programs. This same business model was subsequently copied by Ford Canada in 1999, Toyota North America in 2003 and others since.

In 1998, ID secured the first US automotive sign program in the US for Pattison landing the Saturn division of General Motors. Other US accounts acquired included a large changeover for Toys “R” Us.

In 2004, ID managed the deletion of the Oldsmobile brand for General Motors of Canada, changing over 3,000 sign faces in over 1,500 signs at over 700 dealerships across Canada in the space of one month.

In 2007, ID’s contract with Pattison was bought out and ID embarked on a new chapter of meeting the needs of customers more directly and with greater flexibility.

In 2008, KPMG Canada retained ID to design, specify and implement their sign rights for their new premises at the Bay-Adelaide Centre. After a two-year effort, they are pleased with the results of ID’s efforts and their new corporate signs.

In 2010, ID submitted a proposal for a new sign for the Altus Group at 33 Yonge Street in Toronto. ID’s submission was chosen over competitive alternatives. The sign was installed, without a hitch, in January 2011 on a five-year lease basis whereby ID is responsible for design, specification, manufacture, installation, finance and maintenance.
